Chinquapin Point
8544 Pope Landing Road, Edisto Island
Built in 2007, this Edisto Island home is a raised two-story
nestled among oaks beside a tidal creek and wrapped on three sides by marsh. It is an interpretation of a “sea island” home
with a standing-seam metal roof, gable brackets, wide plank siding, louvered
storm shutters, exposed and scalloped rafter tails, and wrap-around porches. Each room of the house offers a water or marsh
view. The house was designed by Cobb
Architects of Mt. Pleasant and constructed by Patrick Henry Construction of Charleston. It received a 2008 Prism Award from the
Charleston Trident Home Builders Assoc. for the best home that year in its
price range.

Bull Island
The Huffines Company was engaged by the Alfred Lee Loomis, Jr. estate to quietly market their famed hunting Island, Bull Island, on Calibogue Sound across from Hilton Head, SC. Mr. Loomis told us at the time that he appreciated our reputation as conservationist brokers, and that we could place the island with the “right” person in a quiet manner. We successfully sold the 2,088 complex of islands to Birchwood Holdings for $12.25 million. Birchwood previously purchased White Hall Plantation from us, and today Birchwood owns nearly 20,000 acres of hunting properties in the South Carolina Lowcountry. Bull Island will remain a private and natural hunting preserve. The Loomis family history is remarkable. Alfred Lee Loomis, a physicist by trade, developed Loomis Labs in Tuxedo Park, NY. Surrounding himself with some of the greatest minds of that time including Albert Einstein and Robert Oppenheimer, Loomis was directly responsible in developing many technologies that help defeat the Germans. An avid hunter, Loomis with partners purchased all of Hilton Head Island for $120,000 for a private hunting property. His son Alfred Lee Loomis, Jr. later owned Bull Island as well as other nearby islands as private hunting retreats. Like his father, Lee Loomis, Jr was an avid sailor, and headed up the syndicate that won the America’s Cup with Ted Turner at the helm.
Cockfield Plantation
This plantation was owned by two nationally known native sons. Robert Marvin, was the nation’s leading landscape architect with many presidential honors to his credit, while his nephew, Mel Marvin, became famous as a theatre musician who has many credits to his name, including the Tony award winning play, Tintypes. We were approached by the Marvin family to try to do the impossible; sell the plantation for full market value, while at the same time, protecting it from development with a conservation easement. Working with a prospective buyer, we developed an agreeable conservation easement that was placed on the property by the Buyer immediately after the sale, protecting the property, and allowing the Buyer to take advantage of the donation value of the easement. The 860 acres property, with rice field frontage on Folly Creek and Cuckold Creek, sold for $3.7 million in 2001 and has had a number of improvements built and restored since that time.
